There's a quality all published fiction authors share: the ability to tell a story and to tell it well.
When Shirley J. Hyatt of Brookings, Ore., finished each of her first three novels, Side Effects, Lola's Ghost and Lola's Ghost Part II, she was confident her work was worth publishing and reading, but without any offers from traditional publishers she decided to explore other avenues.
A friend suggested she submit her stories to an eBook publisher she had heard about: www.Ebooksforpleasure.com. Chris Fayers, who has spent his entire career in the book business, started the company about a year ago to meet what he saw as a dire need in the industry. "There are so many great authors out there who get frustrated waiting for a publisher to discover them, or spend a small fortune publishing their book themselves. I stepped in to offer an alternative," says Fayers.
Eboksforpleasure.com operates under a traditional publishing model, with contracted authors getting a 50 percent royalty from eBook sales. There are no up front costs involved.
Fayers' company takes care of converting the manuscript into all of the eBook formats available. "I do ask that manuscripts be edited before being submitted to me," he says.
Hyatt is a stickler for getting things right, and by the time her manuscripts crossed Fayers' desk they were all ready to go. He quickly decided to publish all three novels.
Side Effects is the story of a young girl who is very attached to her father. When Sara Jane's father unexpectedly dies, she attempts to recapture their magical early relationship but sadly finds she must go forward alone. Eventually, she discovers her true self and makes peace with her estranged mother.
The Lola's Ghost books tell the story of Lola and Henry, a young couple caught up in circumstances that haunt them throughout their married life and well after their deaths. They thought they had escaped their past, but then it comes back to haunt them in unexpected ways. What really happened to Henry and who is the ghost in Lola's house?
Hyatt has been an avid reader all her life, but didn't start writing until she was near retirement age. Now that her first three novels have been published, she says there are more books in the works. "I love to write. The stories seem to just come to me and flow," she says. "The road to getting published was a difficult one, but well worth the effort. I am so proud of myself."
To those just starting out with writing she offers this advice:
* Before you turn your book in to an editor for review, take the time to make sure the punctuation and spelling are right and that the story flows.
* Let someone you trust read the manuscript and take his or her feedback to heart.
* Trust yourself. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.
* Join a writer's group. The advice and companionship you get from other writers can be invaluable.
