There are some losses in life you never get over. Mary Sinclair didn't think she'd ever find happiness again after losing her beloved Stewart in a climbing accident. Professor Andrew MacLean, meantime, was struggling with a devastating loss of his own. His young son and wife had died in a tragic car accident for which he wrongfully felt he was to blame.

From the get-go, you can't help but relate to and sympathize with the main characters in Where Rivers Meet by Minnesota author Barbara Mackinnon. They are real people with real problems, forced to suffer through no fault of their own.

Readers immediately come to the conclusion that they deserve a second chance at happiness, but will they get it? "A lot of people love a good love story. I thought it would be a nice thing to bring people with similar experiences together, but I put them through hell before they could be together," laughs Mackinnon.

When Mary and Andrew first meet, there are no signs that a romance will soon blossom. Andrew shows up at the door of the bed and breakfast in which Mary is staying in Scotland, dripping wet during a terrible rainstorm. She graciously invites him in, leads him to an available room and says goodnight.

The next day they speak briefly at breakfast and Mary reveals her tragedy. It isn't until later that night that Andrew reveals he has suffered a similar loss. Unlike Mary's loss, which was a terrible accident, the reader soon learns Andrew suspects his family was murdered, but by whom?

"I've always liked mysteries, suspenseful types of stories with the creation of tension or some kind of real threat that makes it seem like something different is going to turn out, or the protagonist is in danger. It keeps readers on edge and turning pages," says Mackinnon, who cleverly reveals clues throughout the story that lead readers to suspect someone close to Andrew killed his family as an act of revenge.

Will Mary suffer a similar fate if she and Andrew get together? You'll have to read the book to find out.

Where Rivers Meet was originally published as a print book in 2006, and has won two national book awards. In 2007, it received a notable rating from the Eric Hoffer Awards, and in 2009, received first place honors in the romance category of the New York Book Awards.
